It’s been one of those mornings. You know what I’m talking about.
The baby was up at 1:30 AM. I woke up to my preschooler staring me in the face at 7:00 AM. My oldest woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Lunches had to be made and packed. Breakfast had to be served. Baby had to be changed and fed. Once again, we were all rushing out the front door with the clock ticking loudly in our heads. We were running late for school. Not to mention I was still dead tired after yet another interrupted night of sleep.
By the time 9:00 AM rolled around, I felt like I ran several miles already. Alas, it was time to put my Realtor hat back on and move forward with my day.
But not quite yet. The Facebook post from my friend, neighbor, past client, and fabulous food stylist from yesterday kept appearing in my head. Gourmet donuts? Yeah, I needed them. Immediately.
I found myself in front of Poqet Donuts (pronounced “pocket”) at Harvard Place, near the corner of Harvard and Main in Irvine. The Donut Star signage was still up, but this was a new donut spot, currently in its soft opening stage.
Next thing you know, I was standing in front of a display of incredibly unique donuts. Avocado donuts, pistachio crème brûlée donuts, tiramisu donuts, pumpkin cheesecake malasadas, nutella malasadas, green tea cake donuts, red velvet cake donuts, maple bacon donuts, blueberry cake donuts, butter salt cake donuts, and several others.
The gentleman behind the counter was very nice and helpful. One of the bakers named Linda joined us and explained a bit more about each donut. Very interesting. A lot of thought and heart went into each of these donuts.
I was given plenty of samples, since I was a newbie here.
Wow. My mouth was in heaven.
The pistachio crème brûlée donut has this nice crispy sugar coating on the outside that goes nicely with the cream filling inside with a very subtle pistachio flavor.
The tiramisu donut starts off sweet at first bite, then ends with a cocoa and espresso tone at the end. It’s beautiful.
The butter salt cake donut surprisingly is my favorite. It’s a rather simple donut compared to the more elaborate ingredients of the others. It has a salty twist that really makes this little cake donut a winner.
I tried a few others, and each donut was special and tasty in its own, unique way. All were delicious.
Like any other donut shop, this one offers coffee, as well as tea, juices, coconut water, and other drinks that can be purchased individually.
There is a build-your-own-donut station too. It includes various fruits, sprinkles, and other toppings to add to freshly made “naked” donuts.
After 15 minutes of donut samples, I walked out with three gourmet donuts, $10 less in my wallet, and a huge smile on my face.
Thank you, Poqet Donuts, for brightening my hectic morning. And for the sugar high. I will be coming back again!
